Helping your baby settle on the Babocush

When your newborn baby is restless, it can be unsettling for everyone in the home. By taking time to recognise the signs of tiredness you can initiate a positive rest cycle for your baby. For some parents, settling a newborn baby can be a lengthy process and at Babocush we aim to alleviate those pressures with our clever comfort cushion design. To get the full benefits of the Babocush like so many other parents, follow our tips for helping your baby settle on the cushion.

Safe Sleeping

Firstly, it is important to remember that a baby needs plenty of rest to aid their development. Resting is critical for a baby’s growth, health and development.  While the Babocush is designed for your baby’s comfort, it is not a place for sleep or to lie on unattended. Some babies will find it very easy to sleep on the cushion, but this is not its function. For advice on safe sleeping and Babocush warnings read more here. Your baby will most likely settle very easily on the Babocush, allowing you to transfer them to their crib or cot to sleep peacefully and safely on their back.

What makes the Babocush comfortable for babies?

After months in the womb, your baby has adapted to specific conditions for comfort, conditions the Babocush can duplicate. When trying to soothe a baby, parents can sometimes recreate their own rest conditions, which isn’t always the most effective action to take. As an adult, relaxation may equate to peace, calm and quiet but for your baby these conditions aren't always effective in inducing relaxation.

In the womb your baby is exposed to movement, some noise and the constant vibration of a mother’s heartbeat. Despite all that is happening in the womb, a baby will sleep for 10–18 hours each day. When relaxing against the soft Babocush cushion, your baby can enjoy the world around them and settle in familiar surroundings. The heartbeat simulator in the Babocush vibrates to replicate the noise of a mother’s heart. The three-speed vibration element relaxes babies, allowing them to settle on the cushion, and with the padded straps holding them in place they feel securely swaddled.

What if my baby doesn’t settle straightaway?

When putting your baby onto the Babocush, make sure to position their head to one side and check the harness. Ideally, your baby would be secured onto the Babocush and settle instantly, as some babies do (don’t believe us? Just watch this). Don’t panic if your baby doesn’t settle straight away, as some babies take more time to get used to the Babocush than others. Make sure the heart simulator is active when you put your baby on the cushion, as the noise will help soothe them. If the cushion is attached to a rocker, turn it on as the added motion of this also helps to settle some newborns.

When you first begin using the Babocush, try it in short bursts at first. It’s important to remember that while you’re introducing something new, you are also bringing back comforts from the womb. Over time your baby will be more and more comfortable on the cushion, especially if they suffer from colic or reflux.

Thousands of babies have benefitted from the cushion and if it takes your baby a while longer don’t worry – for some parents perseverance really is the key to success.
